Stipple – Tag & Monetize Online Photos

Snapping candid photos, uploading them onto a computer, editing them with Photoshop, and posting them online takes time and energy. Luckily, a web-app called Stipple can help online diarists get something back for all the effort they put into posting their every move online. Using Stipple, bloggers and online publishers can tag all the consumer products in their photos – easily directing readers to the retailers that sell those products online and making a little money through revenue sharing in the process.

Let’s say you publish a blog about your fabulous life as a 20-something living in New York City. There’s a good chance your blog includes numerous photos documenting all the places, people, and things you’ve been doing lately. When you sign up for a free account with Stipple, you can enhance your photos by linking to all the products contained within them. Rather than responding to multiple reader emails asking where you got the shoes you were wearing in a recent picture, you can label the shoes using Stipple’s inline editing controls. When you place small transparent dots over the things you’re wearing in online photos – along with some basic details about where those items came from – your readers can find out all the information they need simply by hovering over the photos with a mouse. When an online reader clicks on a dot and purchases the product you labeled, Stipple will pay you a commission based on the price of the sale.

For bloggers who aren’t so concerned about making money from their online endeavors, Stipple also makes it easy to label people in photos – similar to the way that tagging works on Facebook and Flickr. For anyone who’s looking for more ways to share information online – and potentially make a little money in the process – Stipple is definitely a web-app worth looking into.

Practical Uses:

  • Let your readers know where they can buy all the clothes you’re wearing
  • Tag your friends in the photos you post online
  • Tell your readers what you were thinking when a particular photo was snapped
  • Share your fashion knowledge with online fans

Insider Tips:

  • To start using Stipple, add a line of JavaScript to your site’s HTML code
  • Tag any person, place, or thing inside a photo
  • Users can label the objects in their photos by using the web-app’s inline editing tools
  • Stipple dots don’t appear until a user’s mouse hovers over a photo

What we liked:

  • Stipple has created a new way for bloggers to get paid
  • Bloggers don’t necessarily have to “recommend” a product to earn revenue if a reader buys it
  • Publishers can earn money if their readers add items to their Stipple “wish lists”
  • Users can label anything in a photo – not just consumer products

What we didn’t like:

  • The process for adding dots is somewhat confusing, since all edits have to be made on publicly visible pages rather than inside the blog’s CMSor dashboard
