Fitocracy – The Motivational Fitness Network

Looking to shave off a few extra pounds before the end of summer? If diet and exercise alone haven’t worked, you may be itching to try something new. Fitocracy is an online gaming application with a social networking component that people can use to push themselves closer toward their fitness goals.

Fitocracy is a tool aimed squarely at people who are competitive by nature. Sign up for the application by entering your email address and choosing a password, or log in directly through Facebook, Twitter, or RunKeeper. Find friends on the network by adding tags to your profile that reflect your personal interests and by joining groups with users who have similar interests. Once you’ve started following your friends on Fitocracy, you’ll be able to keep up with what they’re doing through your Fitocracy Feed. When you notice a friend stepping it up in the exercise department, give him or her a virtual “prop” as a way to recognize that person’s efforts. To start earning points and props of your own, start tracking your workouts and logging your activities within the mobile app.

The more you exercise, the more points you’ll earn. Fitocracy takes weight and repetition into account when calculating points, and offers more points for certain activities that it deems “more difficult” than others. Accumulate points to move to the next level with Fitocracy, or complete a “quest”—which is like an individual goal—to earn extra accolades on the site.

Practical Uses:

  • Let your online friends motivate you to lose weight
  • Track your exercise history
  • See how much your stamina has improved over time
  • Encourage your friends to continue on their path toward improved physical health

Insider Tips:

  • Login through Facebook, Twitter, or RunKeeper
  • Users can set up their own quests to win bonus points
  • People can create public or private groups
  • Levels and quests get more difficult as people get farther into the Fitocracy game

What we liked:

  • Fitocracy creates an incentive for people to stay active and motivated
  • People can post videos and pose questions to the groups they belong to
  • Group challenges are a great way to get multiple people involved in a goal
  • Fitocracy awards points for all types of activities and exercises

What we didn’t like:

  • Fitocracy’s mobile app doesn’t offer a strong dieting component for people trying to lose weight
